Dattes

Les oasis représentent un modèle écologique d’une grande actualité en ces périodes de menaces dues au réchauffement climatique. La production dattière est au centre de l’économie oasienne. Les recherches et les initiatives  menées dans ce domaine portent principalement sur l'inventaire des diverses variétés de dattes et  l'amélioration de leurs conditions de culture, de leurs qualités et de leur commercialisation, ainsi que sur leurs valeurs nutritives et médicinales.

ECONOMIE

Le commerce des dattes
Le commerce des dattes représente un secteur économique important, avec un grand potentiel de développement. Des pays comme la Tunisie ou Israel, avec moins de 3% de la production mondiale en quantité, se trouvent ainsi au premier rang des exportations en valeur monétaire. Ces résultats s’expliquent principalement par des investissements dans la qualité avec des variétés comme Medjoul ou Deglet nour.

Variétés & agro diversité
Le choix de monocultures variétales, s’il est économiquement intéressant et justifié a pour corollaire une perte de diversité culturale. Il existe par exemple environ 200 principales variétés de dattes en Algérie, qui se différencient par la qualité de leurs fruits (consistance) et par leur appréciation sur le marché. Cette riche diversité est toutefois menacée par la culture massive de la seule Deglet nour.

La consommation des dattes connaît son pic majeur à l’occasion des fêtes du Ramadan, dont la date change chaque année. La capacité des producteurs à se doter de chambres froides (comme ici à Ghardaia en Algérie), est  un élément essentiel de régulation des prix du marché.
